The Evolution of the MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB), has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Over the years, it has evolved in numerous ways, from the early days of sandlot baseball to the highly competitive and advanced league we know today. As we explore the evolution of MLB, we'll also take a look at the teams currently battling it out in the 2023 World Series.


The Beginning of the MLB

The origins of baseball began to take shape in the mid-19th century. The first recorded baseball game was played on June 19, 1846, when the New York Mutuals defeated Knickerbockers 23-1, and the sport rapidly gained popularity in the years that followed. By the late 1800s, baseball had firmly established itself as America's National Pastime, and the first professional leagues were formed.


The Early Years of MLB

In 1903, the modern era of MLB began with the creation of the World Series, a championship series between the American League (AL) and the National League (NL) champions. This marked a significant step in the league's evolution, as it brought together the best teams from both leagues to compete for the title of World Series champion, in a best-of-nine game format.


Integration and Expansion

The mid-20th century brought about significant changes in MLB. One of the most notable was the integration of African American players. In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, paving the way for other talented black players to enter the league, this marked a pivotal moment in MLB's evolution.

MLB also expanded during this period, with teams moving westward, leading to the establishment of franchises like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. Expansion continued into the 1960s and '70s, bringing the total number of teams to 30 by the early 2000s.

 

The Modern MLB

The modern MLB has undergone significant changes and innovations, solidifying its position as one of the most popular sports leagues in the United States and around the world. The Wild Card games, introduced in 2012, offer one-game playoffs between two wildcard teams in each league, adding an element of sudden-death excitement to the postseason. 

During the MLB playoffs, 12 teams will make it to the MLB playoffs with six from both the American League and National League. This includes three division winners from each league and three Wild Card teams. The playoffs consist of four rounds: Wild Card Round, Divisional Round, League Championship Round, and World Series. The winners of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and the National League Championship Series (NLCS) face off in the best-of-seven World Series.

Upon the season ending, the World Series Most Valuable Player is awarded at the conclusion of the Fall Classic which has been presented since 1955. 


2023 World Series: Rangers vs. Diamondbacks

Currently, the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks are competing to determine the next World Series Championships. So far, there’s been 2-7 games played. Game 1 Rangers defeated Diamondbacks 6-5. However, in Game 2 Diamondbacks defeated Rangers 9-1, evening the series at 1-1.

As more games unfold to determine the World Series Championships, a fierce battle between these two dedicated teams, promises an epic showdown.
